EATING ORGANIC ON A BUDGET

One of the most challenging things for us going organic was the money and learning where to go for the best deals. We also had to learn to be flexible. For example many people go grocery shopping on a Friday. We never know what day we will go to the store. When we head to town to save on gas is when we usually hit the store! I never thought we would be able to eat organic on just a single house hold income. When I left my job after the doctors gave Jared 6 months to live, I knew it was going to be very difficult to make ends meet on my husbands salary alone. I had to get real creative!

FIRST THING I LEARNED
Many of the bigger grocery stores are carrying organic now. In our state I can get things several dollars cheaper on certain items. If I have to buy organic zucchini and I buy several pounds at a time I end up saving 6 to 10.00 just on one item! That adds up. I suggest you take a note pad and write down the prices of organic in the area you live at the different stores. By us we have Costco and they have a lot of organic to buy in bulk. That saves us in juicing! Once you do this several times you will know where the best deals are. So do not be afraid to go into all your local stores and look at the prices. It will save you in the long run!
SECOND THING I LEARNED
Grow what you can. We do not have a very big yard but my husband built us a raised bed to keep the animals out and I pack it every year. Right now in Central Arizona it is cold and gets to freezing at night but I still have kale, lettuce, carrots, parsley, broccoli, radishes and potatoes. I have to be diligent and make sure that I cover it with a tarp in the evening for frost concerns. This takes a little dedication but I love my little garden. There is something very healing about growing your own food. I believe there is no comparison! I am here to tell you that I don't have a green thumb! I really had no idea what I was doing and many times I still forget what I planted until it comes up so if I can do it, so can you!
I also grow in my potted plants, celery, chives, herbs and swiss chard! When people come into my house they see I grow food and usually say "Is that swiss chard, its so pretty!" I have slowly taken over the laundry room with edible art! In our living room, there is a faint smell of basil from my newly grown basil plant! My newest adventure is growing stevia! My favorite brand for stevia

The more you can grow of your own food, the more money you will save. Get creative, where there is a will there is a way! I love learning new things.
THIRD THING I LEARNED
Eat what is in season. When things are in season and cheaper in the store I buy in bulk and freeze what I can! Here is a great site that tells you what is in season in your area! http://www.simplesteps.org/eat-local
You can also join a CSA
(Community Supported Agriculture)
It is a great way to get involved in your community, get exercise and help you and everyone else all at the same time!
Here is a great site to look at for CSA info and to find one in your area!
WASTE NOTHING
There have been times where we haven't had money for grocery shopping. I have learned to not waste anything. For example, extra parsley I turn into Parsley Tea
I make almond milk and use the leftover pulp! Recipes soon to come on that so sign up for our newsletter so you don't miss a thing!

I have met many people that barely ever set foot in a store. They live off of what to grow. There are many ways you can get creative if eating organic is something you want to do. You have to love yourself enough to love your health I always say! Eating organic for us is a necessity.
